PHOTO AFRICA
Capture the raw beauty of The Gambia with our photojournalist tutor, Glenn Edwards
Freedom is the key word as you are allowed to roam at carefully researched locations where potential photographs surround you.
The tour incorporates three set days within your week's holiday, each individually themed to ensure your passion for photography can be explored to the full.
On the alternate days, those participants who wish to devote their entire stay to photography will be given the opportunity to compete in a Photomarathon.
The workshops take you away from the normal package excursions and will give you the time and space to get the best from your subject. It will challenge you, as well as create the environment you need to test your skills and learn new techniques.
Day 1 - Culture & Creeks
The Culture and Creeks tour starts with a visit to Abuko Nature Reserve. Here you will witness the feeding of the hyena and get a chance for some close-up photography of the roaming monkeys.
You will then move on to Makasutu Cultural Forest and have the opportunity to photograph the wild baboon, exotic birdlife and dancing women in traditional dress before a relaxing trip through the creeks in a dug out canoe.
As the sun sets you will enjoy a barbecue and buffet and talk about your first day adventures with newly made friends.
The day ends with the Fire Extravaganza. Entertaining, exciting and full of photographic imagery.
Day 2 - Concern Universal Village
Starting with a journey to St. Joseph's Family Farm which takes you through the real Africa on real African roads, where you will be met with refreshments.
From here, the trip takes you out to a village, where you will enjoy a freedom to explore and photograph village life on your own, or in the company of a guide.
This is not a tourist destination. What you see is real and is happening in villages all over Africa. Learn about the work of Concern Universal where it is taking place.
Enjoy the welcome and friendship you will receive throughout the village from children and adults alike. The most amazing experience.
Day 3 - Shoreline
A short trip to a family producing palm wine where a little tasting session takes place, is followed by lunch at Sangyang Paradise Beach where you can swim, sunbathe and relax. If relaxing is not for you then stroll along one of The Gambia's most magnificent stretches of sand.
Next stop is Gunjur, a hive of activity where fish are caught and sold. Women bring the fish in from the boats through the waves to a beach where nets are being repaired for the next trip out to sea. Shafts of light illuminate the fish in smoking rooms while thousands lay drying in the sun. As the sun sets, the 'golden hour' gives some of the best photographic light you can imagine.
